The demand for programmers is great in the Czech Republic. Why this is so – and what can be done to fill the gaps on the job market was the subject of the interview our founder, Jana Večerková, gave to the Tyden magazine in January 2020.

The title of the article might be a little bit misleading, actually, as we cannot make a programmer out of anyone. It’s the student who makes a programmer out of themselves by deciding to learn a new skill, being curious, and putting in a lot of time and effort.

Our role is elsewhere – by creating a learning environment where our students strive for excellence, have a clear study path, and have access to experienced mentors who can help them accelerate their progress. However, we certainly do believe that anyone who is dedicated, hard working and intellectually curious can switch careers to IT, if they wish to do so.

In the interview, Jana pointed out the consequences that a lack of IT workers has on the Czech job market: For instance, companies which do not have enough developers cannot pursue new, innovative projects because their workforce is already at full capacity. Also, motivating employees to stay can be challenging as they seek more alluring opportunities elsewhere.

The reason for this shortage of IT workers is that the educational system does not place great emphasis on IT skills. Consequently, many students do not realise early enough that working as a developer can be enjoyable as well as rewarding.
Coding Bootcamp Praha aims to change this by teaching people to code. It offers an intensive 12-week programme that will help anyone committed to pursuing a career in web development to develop the needed skills. In this way, a career in IT is within reach for anyone with the right mindset and determination.
